18 What is MLA Style?

MLA stands for Modern Language Association.  MLA is a scholarly association with the aim to promote the teaching of language and literature.

The basics of formatting a paper in MLA Style include the following:

  • 12pt font
  • Time New Roman (or another legible font)
  • double-spaced
  • header with last name and page numbers
  • Heading in the top left corner of the first page
    • Your name
    • Instructor’s name
    • Course name
    • Date
  • centered title (same font size, no underlining, no bold printing)
  • NO extra space between paragraphs
