12 What are the Steps to Writing an Essay?

Steps in Writing an Essay

  1. Understand the Assignment

    • Read the prompt carefully. Identify the purpose, audience, required format, and length.

  2. Choose a Topic and Develop a Thesis

    • Select a subject (if not assigned) that fits the guidelines.

    • Formulate a clear thesis statement (main argument or claim).

  3. Research and Gather Evidence

    • Find credible sources to support your thesis.

    • Take careful notes, tracking information for citations.

  4. Plan and Outline

    • Organize your main points and supporting details.

    • Create an outline with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

  5. Write the First Draft

    • Introduction: Begin with a hook, introduce your topic, and end with your thesis.

    • Body Paragraphs: Each paragraph covers a single point supporting your thesis. Use evidence and explanation (e.g., the PIE method: Point, Information, Explanation).

    • Conclusion: Restate your thesis in new words, summarize main points, and explain why your argument matters.

  6. Format Your Essay (MLA Guidelines)

    • Set 1-inch margins, use 12-point Times New Roman font, and double-space the text.

    • Add an MLA heading (your name, instructor’s name, course, date) in the top-left corner.

    • Center your essay title below the heading.

    • Indent the first line of every paragraph by 0.5 inches.

    • Include in-text citations for any quotes or paraphrased information.

    • Add a Works Cited page at the end with full publication details for each source, in alphabetical order, using a hanging indent.

  7. Revise and Edit

    • Review for content clarity, logical flow, and strong arguments.

    • Edit for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and correct citation.

    • Double-check MLA formatting throughout.

  8. Finalize and Proofread

    • Ensure your final draft is polished, error-free, and meets all assignment criteria.

    • Submit as instructed.

Key MLA Format Reminders

  • Use a clear, legible font (typically Times New Roman, size 12).

  • Include a page header with your last name and page number in the top right corner of each page.

  • Double-space everything, including the Works Cited page.

  • For citations: use in-text citations (author’s last name and page number), and list full citations on the Works Cited page.
