17 Writing a Conclusion

How to Write a Conclusion

What is a Conclusion?

A conclusion is the last paragraph of your essay. It’s your final chance to remind readers of your main ideas and help them understand why your topic matters.

Why is a Conclusion Important?

  • It wraps up your essay and gives your reader a sense of completion.

  • It leaves a strong final impression.

  • It shows the significance of your ideas.

Structure of a Strong Conclusion

Follow these steps:

1. Restate the Thesis
Say your main argument again, but use different words.

2. Summarize Your Main Points
Briefly remind your reader of your main reasons or evidence (don’t just copy from your body paragraphs).

3. Explain Why It Matters
Answer the question, “So what?” Tell your reader why your topic or argument is important.

4. End with a Final Thought
Leave your reader with something to think about: a suggestion, a call to action, or a thoughtful observation.

Example Conclusion

In the end, reading every day helps students succeed in school. By building vocabulary and strengthening thinking skills, daily reading prepares students for challenges both in and out of the classroom. Because of this, making time to read is one of the best habits any student can build for future success.

Helpful Sentence Starters
