What is Metacognition?

Metacognition is Thinking about Thinking.

“In other words, it is the ability to examine your own thinking process in order to make the adjustments necessary to help you better comprehend, retain and apply the information you’re reading” (Oster, 55).

How do readers Develop Metacognition?

Step 1: Develop a plan before reading

  • Take three minutes to write down everything you know about the topic you are reading about.
  • What additional questions do you have about this topic?
  • Can you turn headings/titles into a question?

Step 2:  Monitor your understanding during reading

  • Listen to your voice in your head (I know it sounds weird but it helps!)
  • Read with a pen/pencil in your hand and write about what you are reading. This will help you focus and concentrate

Step 3: Evaluate your thinking after reading and make changes as needed

  • Can you write a quick summary? If not, return to the reading
  • Can you write a quick list of what you learned about the topic?
