About the Authors

Vladimir Marinich, known to his colleagues and friends as Vlad, was one of the first ten full-time faculty to be hired when the college opened its doors in 1970. He loved the college and its student-oriented philosophy that promoted learning and true interaction between students and faculty. He stayed for almost 43 years, during which time he taught various history courses and created the Frederick Schoenbrodt Honors Program, was awarded lifetime membership in Phi Theta Kappa, and conducted tours to Russia, Egypt, and Greece. Upon his retirement Vlad was recommended and received the status of Professor Emeritus, and shortly thereafter he was awarded an honorary degree by the Board of Trustees and President of the College. He never looked upon his employment at HCC as work. It was, to him, a magnificent experience, challenge, and adventure.

Rosemary Williams is associate professor of history in the Social Science and Teacher Education division. She earned her Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science, where she studied the opposition to the communist regime in Czechoslovakia. She joined the college in 2009 as an adjunct faculty member and became a full faculty member in 2012. She has taught courses in American history, western civilization, European history, modern world history, and Russian history.
