verbs

adjectives

adverbs

prepositions

conjunctions

articles

interjections

If you need some practice identifying these parts of speech, visit __________.

Examples:

Here are some sentences with a typical word order in academic English:

Subject – Verb – Object (optional)

Albert Einstein developed a theory.

James Rouse built Columbia, Maryland.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie writes fiction.

Writers often add more information in academic sentences. For instance, we use prepositional phrases:

Albert Einstein developed the theory of relativity.

James Rouse built Columbia, Maryland in 1967.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie writes fiction about Nigeria.

and adjectives:

Albert Einstein developed the complex theory of relativity.

James Rouse built beautiful Columbia, Maryland in 1967.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie writes fiction about modern Nigeria.

adverbs:

Albert Einstein developed the highly complex theory of relativity.

James Rouse enthusiastically built beautiful Columbia, Maryland in 1967.

Currently, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie writes fiction about modern Nigeria.

We can also use coordinating conjunctions:

Albert Einstein gradually developed the complex theory of relativity and quantum mechanics.

James Rouse _______built beautiful Columbia, Maryland in 1967, and the Village of Cross Keys in Baltimore in 1961.

Currently, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Chigozie Obioma write fiction about modern Nigeria.
